BCMBER ESCORT MISSION - 13 P-38’s, Lts.. Jackson, Phillips, Bower, Cram,
Hagenback, larlett, Opdahl, §ias, Niles, Pettus, Anderson, V.'ilscn and Grieshaber,
.took off at 1115 hours, together with formations from the 27th'and 71st Fighter
Squadrons to escort about 36 B-26's to the Railroad Bridge at ANGTTOLA, TTAU.
The formation rendezvoused with the bombers near DJEDEHA at approximately H40
{hours,. Route: Landfall at Sicily near mARSAIA; thence out over CAPE ZAFFARANO;
thence South of IJPARI ISLANDS; thence to target, and return to base by same
route. Weather: to target, CAVU; over target, CAVU with 2/10’s clouds between
8,000 and' 9,000 feet; to bade, hazy. The formation wqs over the target at 1345
■ ’ hours; the bombers flyihg at 11,000 feet, the p-38’s flying at 12,000 feet,.
Bombing: the bombers did not hit the bridge but hit points 'around it; they hit
in and around the Mars, lling Yards at CATANZARO. Sightings: at target time

Lt. Vrilakas returned early and landed at 1245 hours because his right engine
was cutting out. Lt. Allan returned early and landed at 1325 hours because his
aircraft began vibrati j. The formation returned and landed at 1615 Jiours.
