Little remains in our records of the collections and programs of the library. Summer
Reading was held from the programs’ national beginning almost 100 years ago.
Minutes record book expenditures and occasionally mention numbers of library
cardholders but it is not until the move in 1965 that we have records of the monthly
programming events.
-or the first twenty years in the old Post Office building, the librarian and city were
•squired to send a report to the Federal Government detailing the use of the building as
a library. After twenty years, ownership of the property was handed over to the City of
Hastings and the library board entered into a lease of the property from the city for
$1.00 per month. Many times over the years, the building underwent repairs and
-emodeling as librarians and staff tried to make the most of the space available. Plans
for expansion existed but the funding was never found to make any additions to the

building. Florence Wilson, Eileen Oehler and Barbara Schondelmayer were the
librarians overseeing these years as the library created various relationships with the
surrounding townships and State Library to determine funding and service areas.
Toward the end of the 20th century the library board decided to find new space for the
library and develop adequate funding from those government bodies choosing to
participate.

Rutland Charter Township residents approved millage for the library beginning in 1991.
Hastings Charter Township tried several plans including contracting with Freeport’s
library and township families paying non-resident fees to use the Hastings Library. As
the plans for a new library went forward, millage was again requested from the two
townships in the amount of 1.6 mils.
