Some letters recovered from Lieutenant Dibble’s wife, who later remarried, made mention of the fact that he’d been recom mended for the Distinguished Flying Cross, but didn’t give any details of the mission in volved. Mr. Dibble contacted the Air Force con cerning his uncle’s case, and was told that the service would need historical evidence to verify the recommendation before the medal could be awarded. It took three years of research and tracking down former squadron pilots to reconstruct the events that first led to the Distinguished Flying Cross citation. The Distinguished Flying Cross was awarded posthumously to the family of 1st Lt. James Dibble during a Dec. 14 ceremony at Wright-Patterson. The lieutenant was originally recommended for the award after leading three squadrons of the First Fighter “The hard part was establishing ’which Group on a bomber escort mission from mission brought about the citation, ini iterms North Africa over Aversa, Italy, on Aug. 30, of chronology and exactly what happened at 1943. the time,” Mr. Dibble noted. He was killed only nine days later, his unit eventually transferred to another com mand, and the recommendation is thought to have been “lost” in the interim. A nephew, James Dibble, the lieutenant’s namesake, took an interest in his uncle’s part in the war after visiting the Air Force ' Museum here in 1985. “I saw a picture there of the North Africa area, and it spurred the whole thing,” Mr. Dibble, now 40, recalled. “Very little was known by the family up until that point.” What Mr. Dibble uncovered was the mis sion the 94th Fighter Squadron flew on Aug. 30, 1943. As group commander that day, Lieu tenant Dibble led the 94th and two other squadrons of the First Fighter Group — a total of 44 P-38 fighters — as they escorted two bomber groups against the marshalling yards at Aversa. The group was attacked by 75 German fighters as they neared the target. Lieute nant Dibble formed his fighters in close to WM TWO NOTES Tn NOTE the bombers, then fought a defensive air battle that lasted close to an hour. Thirteen American fighters were downed, but not a single bomber was lost in the raid. A little more than a week later, while strafing a German convoy in Italy, his plane was shot down and Lieutenant Dibble was reported missing in action. A year later his status was revised to killed in action and, in October 1946, his family was informed that the lieutenant’s grave had been located near Naples. The Distinguished Flying Cross citation was again submitted to the Air Force in May 1990, bearing the signature of Lieutenant Dibble’s former commanding officer. “It was very emotional for me,” said William Dibble, Lieutenant Dibble’s brother, who accepted the posthumous award at Wright-Patterson. “I remembered all of the pain my mother and father felt during the time he was listed as missing?in action. McCann 5844 Gate Post Road Charlotte, North Carolina 28211 January 16, 2003 Dear Jim, Here are a few thoughts I remember of these two missions, August 25 and August 30, 1943.1 hope this may be of some help. Foggia Strafing - August 25, 1943 Approximately a week prior to August 25, we started practicing low level squadron formation flying, 50 feet above the desert sand south of Tunis. These practice flights were made after the group return from the mission flown that day. No real reason was given for this practice but, it certainly raised some questions for giving this order. We all felt something was coming upThe squadron formation was made up of three (3) flights, four (4) P-3 8s per flight, for a total of twelve (12) P-38s. The flights flew line abreast and the squadron leader flew the middle flight. We practiced making 90-degree turns at this low level. When the squadron leader made a turn, the flight into which the squadron leader had turned, would pass under the squadron leader’s flight and at the same time, start turning with the squadron leader. The other flight leader would lead his flight behind and over, if necessary, the squadron leader’s flight and at the same time, turn with the squadron leader. After the 90-degree turn had been completed, the three flights would be line abreast. This maneuver between the flights and the ground was very tight and very tricky at times. When the orders came down, they specified that each squadron in the group had to put up two squadrons plus spares. This was a very tough assignment, taking into consideration damage planes and planes needing repair. I don’t remember exactly how many planes were in a squadron but feel sure it was between 30 and 35. In any event, each squadron had to put up 24 planes plus 4 spares for a total of 28 planes. Each of the groups, 1st, 14th and the 82nd, had three squadrons each. Each group put up six (6) squadrons, 72 planes, for a total of 216 planes over the target. The squadrons flew the mission three flights line abreast, squadrons in trail and stacked down. The mission leader led his group of squadrons, all in trail and stacked down, out over the Bay of Tunis to an altitude of 1000 feet. He circled around over the Bay of Tunis until the other two groups of squadrons, all in trail and stacked down, joined up in trail of his squadrons. It was quite a sight to see eighteen (18) squadrons in this formation. The mission leader led us on a course toward the islands off the west coast of Sicily, letting down, en route, to 50 feet above the water. We turned and flew east, parallel to the north coast of Sicily. We were never in sight of Sicily. The water was very calm, no waves, just big swells, which made it very difficult to judge your height above the water. I actually saw ripples on the sea from the prop wash of the plane ahead of me. At the Isle of Stromboli, the mission leader picked up a predetermined compass heading that was calculated to provide an entrance into Italy through a radar gap in the German Radar System, provided we had maintained at an altitude of fifth (50) feet or less. �As we made landfall, we had to immediately climb through the valleys up to an altitude of 4000 feet in order to clear the mountain range. The formation was flying line abreast while dropping belly tanks. After we cleared the mountains and started over flatter terrain, we were able to readjust and fly our previous squadron formation. When we reach the Adriatic Sea, we turned northwest and flew parallel to the coast of Italy, with all squadrons in trail and fifty (50) feet off the water. We passed by a small Italian gunboat and the crew was waving to as we went by. When the mission leader reached his IP, he turned his squadron into the land and all the other squadrons in trail turned, in place, into the land and started shooting up every plane and military object on the ground. We had 216 “P-38’s” in a company front formation sweeping the Foggia Area. My squadron turned southeast after passing over all the targets. We flew parallel to the mountains. The Germans shot their 88mm cannon up and down the line of the P-38 formation. Lt. Warren caught an 88 shell in his right boom. After the impact, the right gear hung down about 45 degrees to the boom. Before he had to feather his right engine and turn off all of his electrical equipment, we told him we would lead, cover and stay with him until he got to Sicily. He lost his generator when he lost his right engine. We flew this course until we thought we were about where we entered and cross Italy. We turned west and started to cross the mountains. We had to fly slower to stay with Lt. Warren. On single engine, he was able to climb over 4.000 feet of mountains and crash-land at an abandoned airstrip in Sicily. Lt. Warren performed an amazing feat during this flight. He had to hold the rudder pressure with his feet the whole time after he lost his right engine. He lost the rudder trim tab when he was hit by the 88 shell. The rudder pressure increases when the air speed decreases during his climb over the mountains. Lt. Warren said he had to put both feet on the same side of the console so he could switch feet and rest his legs. Aversa, Italy B-26 Bomber Escort Mission - August 30, 1943 There is very little I can add to what is written about this mission. You have received documents that I have never seen and have talked with a lot of pilots who were on this mission with me. I never heard of there being a fourth fighter squadron called “Broadway” that flew with us. The only briefing I remember attending was held in the squadron area. I only saw three squadrons en route to the rendezvous and weaving over the bombers. The rendezvous was at sea and not very far from Italy. I never saw a fourth squadron. We flew three (3) squadrons line abreast. The group leader was the middle squadron. Over the bombers, his squadron would “S” back and forth and the other two squadrons would weave back and forth swapping sides. As far as I can recall, I feel we had only 36 fighters (P-38s)'over the target, less early returns turns that left after spares had left. Frankly, some of the descriptions of the flight to the target sounded like it was written by an intelligence clerk who wrote up the mission report for the intelligence officer, pin pointing where �we crossed the coast, type of cloud coverage and forming up a Luffberry circle. I can’t possibly believe any squadron had the time to perform such a maneuver with the constant attacks and still try to stay with the bombers. A lot of us called the maneuver of the German as the yo yo. They had us in their yo-yo, diving down on us and climbing back up after we turned into the attack. Attacking from both sides finally broke up the coverage we were trying to give to the bombers. I distinctly remember a radio transmission, “all the bombers have moved out to sea, lets start trying to work our way out to sea.” I never heard that the Germans were firing rockets at us. That is real news. Also, I didn’t see any Me-109s flying around with belly tanks. That is news. Of course, we were breaking right and left into attacks and I didn’t pay any attention to detail. I just knew they were Germans. I never saw the Italians press an attack like that. / I was surprised to see the comment about me taking my flight back to help one of our / buddies, who was all alone and under attack He was above us and when the Germans saw us / coming back, they broke off their attack. Our buddy dove down and under our flight to freedom. / To help assure we had a better chance to get out without an attack by the Germans, I called my / element leader to pull up even with me. In this formation, we could weave back and forth i together. My element leader, I am sure, was very glad to get this order. Normally, I never talk i about this. I did mention it to Fred Nichol when we were talking about this mission, during one I of our reunions. He knew the pilot’s name that was involved in this little rescue but I never knew \._who it was until Fred told me. So, you must have learned this from Fred. This might be interesting to you in regard to your comment about flying four flights squadron formation. We in the 71st received a new squadron commander in September 1943, Major Hanes. He had been in the air corps a number of years before the war began. He was an excellent pilot and commander - a real leader. He had undoubtedly served with the group commander, Col. Richards, and was close friend. One day in a very casual manor, he asked me for my opinion about starting to fly our missions with four flights in stead of three flights- two flights with two flights behind and stacked down. After thinking about it for a minute or so; I told him I thought it would be a great idea because I thought it would give us greater maneuverability and more firepower. He agreed with my comments and let me know he thought our present formation was too cumbersome and I agreed. Later on I believe the group started flying this type of squadron formations. I know Major Hanes could have sold Col. Richard on this idea, as well as, the 15th Air Force. I left for home shortly after this conversation with Major Hanes. One heavy flak position of 4 to 6 guns, 1 1/2 miles North of Zapponita and 1/2 mile inland. 50 P-38’s down base by 1900 hrs. after landing at Termini and Gela. 7 P-38’s have not returned to base; l.was shot down (Lt. WILLIAMS) over the target and he was seen to bail out from 300 ft. and chute open. 1 P-38 is lost (Lt. VIALL), he was last seen at 0900 hrs. leaving fornation as he could, not release his belly tanks. 5 P-38’s are still in Sicily, 2 of which crash landed. CHRONOLOGY: Time off 0706 hrs. African Area s^nce September 9th, , ^reported missing in actic was sent to you by The Adjutant General on September 24th. Further information has been received to the effect that Lieutenant Dibble was the pilot of a P-38 Lightning fighter plane which left Sicily on September 9th on a patrol and strafing mission to southern Italy. The report states that about 5:25 p.m. while strafing an enemy truck convoy along a road approximately 30 miles east of Agropoli, Italy, Lieutenant Dibble's plane was observed to climb to about 2,000 feet with his cockpit on fire apparently caused by enemy antiaircraft fire. From this position your husband bailed out and was last seen with his parachute open about 1500 feet above the ground drifting away from the convoy. • There were no other persons in the plane with your husband. The above facts constitute all the information available. Dibble: Killed in Action Description An account of the resource Typically pilots rotated home after their 50th mission. James took off for his 49th mission on Septemebr 9, 1943, and never returned. He was shot down on a straffing run near the town of Padula, Italy. Initially there was much confusion amongst the other P-38 pilots, and it was thought James survivied and may have been taken prisoner. Ultimately it was discovered that James had been shot down and then killed by German soldiers. James was ultiamtely brought home and buried in Mt. Hope Cemetery in Middleville, Michigan. Jim Dibble’s Last Mission Lt. Jim Dibble on September 9, 1943 was assigned as the Squadron Leader - composed of 12 P-38 “Lightning” aircraft of the 94th Fighter Squadron, 1st Fighter Group which departed Dittano, Sicily to cover and patrol the Salerno invasion area. Upon completion of our allotted patrol time and encountering no enemy aircraft the shipboard controller directed us to attack a large concentration of German equipment and men reported in this region. Lt. Dibble led his squadron on a low-level attack against a large camouflaged and well defended German force. On his initial strafing attack both Lt. Dibble and his wingman, Lt. Stanley Wojick were shot down due to the very intense heavy small arms, machine gun and 20mm fire. Unfortunately, Lt. Dibble was killed and Lt. Wojick, who bailed out, was severely injured and became a prisoner of war. Lt. Dibble, from Hastings Michigan, was on his 49th combat mission and only needed one more mission to complete his combat tour of 50 missions and return home. He was an outstanding pilot, leading his P-38 fighter squadron against a formidable enemy force. �He was a short, feisty fighter pilot who broached no fear in his previous 48 combat missions and an individual who received the admiration and well deserved respect of his fellow fighter pilots. US ARMY 3 June 1944. SUBJECT: Proposed Citation for 1st Fighter Group, AAF. TO Commanding General, Fifteenth Air Force. ; 1. Under the provisions of War Department Circular No. 333, 1943 and Circular No. 26, NATOUSA dated 6 March 1944, it is requested that a citation for the 1st Fighter Group, Twin Engine, Arny Air Force, for outstanding performance of duty in action and for extraordinary heroism over the Foggia network of airdromes on 25 August 1943 in the first and greatest mass, long range, low level strafing attack ever carried out, be approved and that the citation be confirmed in War Department General Orders. I 2. In August 1943, a large force of enemy fighters and bombers were concentrated on the main Foggia Airdrome and its ten (10) satellites. An re ale d at at least one incomplete photographic coverage on 22 August 1943 revealed hundred and eighteen (118) bombers, seventy-two (72) fighters^ 3, and fortyfive (45) transports on these fields. Because of their easyr striking live that these distance, of the projected landing at Salerno, it was imperati enemy aircraft be destroyed. The wide dispersal of these aircraft made it impossible to accomplish this task by normal action of heavy bombers. Thus, the Air Force determined to wipe out this enemy concentration by the first mass, longrange, lav level strafing raid ever carried out. Three (3) groups of P-38’s, totaling one hundred and forty (140) aircraft, were to be used in this important operation. In the vicinity of Kairouan, Tunisia, throughout the three (3) day period preceding the day set for the attack, long and secret practice missions were held. Unless complete surprise could be achieved it was anticipated that losses on this raid might be exceptionally severe. Close formation was an absolute necessity. The most accurate navigation and split second timing would be necessary in order to reach the initial point and then spread out on the correct routes of attack for each of the nine (9) separate targets which extended over an area of nine hundred (900) square miles. In order to avoid detection by enemy radar, it was imperative that the entire formation remain under an altitude of one hundred (100) feet along the entire route. At minimum altitude the F-38’s would be subjected to aerial attack and heavy ground fire for 300 miles over Italy. 3. Taking off from Mateur, Tunisia, at 0?06 hours on 25 August 1943> sixty-five (65) P-38‘s of the 1st Filter Group proceeded to the rendezvous point at Zembra Island vhere they met the 82nd and 14th Fighter Groups. Flying in perfect low level formation, the three (3) groups flew on the deck past Sicily, hit the western coast of Italy at Praia a Mare, on the Gulf of Policastro, 400 miles from the take-off point. They then swept across Italy at tree top level for 300 miles, reached Molfetta, on the east coast of Italy, exactly as planned, and th en flew over water up the coast - 1 - �I < •where the 82nd and 14th Fighter Groups turned off at their respective turn ing points. At a point near Manfredonia, under the superb leadership and navigation of the Operations Officer of the 1st Fighter Group, the three (3) squadrons divided, and at a speed of 300 mph .at tree top level, headed for their three (3) targets, Foggia satellites 1, 2, and 4. Light and heavy anti-aircraft and small .arms fire was encountered from various points along the way, including destroyers in the Gulf of Manfredonia and from the target area. Fifty-seven (5?) ?-38’s of the 1st Fighter Group swept over their assigned targets, strafing everything in sight. Using the most conservative estimates, the 1st Filter Group destroyed thirty-six (36) aircraft, one (1) of which was destroyed in the air, and severely damaged fifty-two (52) others. The aircraft claimed as destroyed were seen to explode and burn. Strafing on the return routes, the 1st Fighter Group suc miscellacessfully attacked locomotives, freight cars, powerlines, trucks, ' ’ neous installations, and a troop train of twenty (20) railway cars, killing and wounding many enemy troops. On this raid the 1st Fighter Group lost four (4) F-38’s. Far heavier losses were avoided because, as a result of superb flying and navigation, the enemy did not receive warning in time. 4. In all, a total of sixty-four (64) enemy aircraft was claimed >yed by the entire mission, and ei^ity-six (86) were damaged on the destroyec ‘ <of which the 1st Filter Group destroyed and damaged more than half ground, aircraft. Over 70^ of the destroyed and damaged aircraft were of these ail bombers. Subsequent interpretation of aerial photographs confirmed that the ■ - - ~ successft „;:i3ful, and placed the number of planes lost by the mission was highly Axis as considerably greater than the conservative totals listed above. Completely disregarding anti-aircraft fire, intense small arms fire, and possible eneny aerial opposition, the pilots, by superb navigation, swept across and then up Italy, where they split off for their respective attacks on the different Foggia airdromes. The heroic pilots of the 1st Fighter Group swept across the eneny fields, strafing the widely dispersed aircraft, gun positions, eneny troops, and other militaiy targets. In this attack the 1st Fighter Group destroyed and severely damaged a total of eighty eight (88) hostile aircraft, with the loss of only two (2) P-38’s, while the entire mission accounted for a total of one-hundred and fifty (150) air craft destroyed or damaged on the ground. Thus, at this critical time before the landings at Salerno, a crippling blow was dealt to the eneny. By 1895, $75.00 was set aside for books and supplies. 1896: Annie Powers was delegated to begin setting up a library. Her first purchases included a bookcase and a shipment of books from the State Librarian, Mary Spenser. 1896: Ms. Rosella Goodyear became the first librarian of the reading room above the Hastings Banner building. This was the start of what would become the Hastings Public Library. 1903 1906: The Women's Club had to move their collection into a room in the southwest corner of City Hall due to growth. 1908 1913 1915: The collection had grown to 500 volumes and the Women's Club voted to donate their collection to a new city library. 1918 1918: A live line of residents passed books from City Hall, up Broadway, to their new location in the high school. Helene Fairchild is the first head librarian. 1923 1922: $79.50 donated to the Library Extension Fund from a benefit Play. 1921: New Director Jean Barnes began her 31 year career overseeing a collection that numbered well over 6,000 titles with a monthly circulation of 1,700. 1928 1933 1938 1943 1948 1953 1958 1963 1968 1973 1978 1983 1988 1949: The library is rated among the top school/public libraries in the state for cities with populations of 5,000-10,000. 1954: Arloa Lathrop willed the city $15,000 that could only be used “for a separate building and are to be held until other funds make a separate building available.” 1955: The library moves to the new wing of the high school and is named the William T. Wallace library in memory of a former high school principal. 1963: Ethel Groos headed a committee studying the feasibility of converting the building into a Public Library. 1963: The Upjohn Family gave a $5000 grant to renovate and equip the building. The Thornapple Foundation donated $10,000 and the Tyden & Viking Companies invested $1,500 in the project. 1963: The city purchased the former US Post Office for $1. Built in 1924, the building had cost $77,000 and stood on land valued at $6.000. 1964: Plans for renovating the Post Office into a public library were put in motion. Ethel Groos, Rev. Don Gury, Kate McIntyre, Rose Cook, and Clifford Dolan were appointed to the first library board. Florence Wilson was hired as head librarian. 1964: Throughout the summer of 1964 one book drive after another added 2,500 books to the collection. The gargantuan task of processing all these books kept Mary Panfil and Sadie Brower busy into late fall. January 16, 1965, the new Hastings Public Library opened for 40.5 hours a week. Any property owner in the City of Hastings could use its at no cost. Residents outside the city limits could purchase a non-resident card for their family for $2.50 a year. In 1974 Hastings became a charter member of the Lakeland Library Federation, which later became the Lakeland Library Cooperative, a group of 42 public libraries in 82 in different locations. 1974: Florence Wilson retired and Eileen Oehler was hired as Director. 1977: The library's collection has grown to 30,000 books and 100 periodicals with an annual circulation of 39,000. 1978: After receiving a $5,000 donation, the Board considered building an addition. This plan was tabled, but the lack of space and rising cost of materials, services and overhead was becoming a huge problem. 1984: Eileen Oehler retired and Barbara Schondelmayer was hired as Library Director. 1987: Some much-needed renovations were made, including a new roof and heating plant, plus new curtains, and paint. 1995: Susan Smith was hired as Assistant Director in charge of marketing. 1993 1998 1997: The library installed a new circulation desk and an online card catalog was introduced. 1998: A $50,000 donation allowed the Board to begin discussing becoming a District library. However, Hastings Township and Rutland Townships backed away from the District Library idea and plans to build a new library serving the city and both Townships beg 1999: The capital campaign, “Our Library – Our Community Legacy” began with a $3.5 million goal. �In August, 2000, both Hastings Township and Rutland Township voted to pay dedicated millages for library services. 2003 2008 2013 2003: The DDA helps the Library Board negotiate the purchase of a plot of land at the corner of State and Boltwood. In July 2004, the "Last Chapter Building Campaign" kicked off to add $1.7 million to the previously raised building funds. In May 2005, a generous donor promised to match every dollar donated between May 12th and August 31st at a rate of 4:1. On August 31, 2005, the goal was met. Weekly meetings were held throughout the fall and winter until building plans were set to paper and contracts signed. On May 19, 2006, ground was broken for the new library. On June 7, 2007, the people of Hastings once again lined the streets of Hastings, from the old library on Church Street across from the Court House, to the new Library, standing proudly beside City Hall. 2018 2023 2021: The Library's 125th Anniversary was celebrated with fun and games, ice cream and a foam party at Thornapple Plaza, across from the Library. All available German fighters (the “Pik-As Geschwader” together with Stab and I/JG 77 and IV/JG 3) were scrambled to intercept. The aircraft of II Gruppe climbed out of Cancello between 11:37 and 11:46 AM and soon afterwards engaged the enemy—the following account appears in Robert Gugelberger’s diary: “11:39 AM, scramble. Climbed to 4,000 m. An enemy formation with strong fighter escort approaching the coast. We positioned ourselves above the formation intending to fire our rockets into it from in front. The fighter escort circled behind the formation. We dove steeply, reversed course, and approached from dead ahead. I fired and saw both rockets fly through the middle of the formation, however they exploded behind it. Dove beneath the bomber formation and pulled up. Above I met Fw. Steinmuller—we flew together and attacked Lightnings. 50 to 60 were circling madly. Another rocket-armed machine fired into the Lightnings and two went down. More launches and more crashes in the water. I attacked twice from above in a dive. Got in a brief burst. Then I spotted two Lightnings, positioned myself behind the second machine and fired. Burst was on target but now I was surrounded by Lightnings. Climbed vertically and was happy to have got away. The Lightning I fired at was shot down by another of out pilots. Fuel was running low and I had to return and land at 12:51 PM. On the way I saw American life rafts in the water. Uffz. Niesen failed to return.” Leo Niesen had been shot down in combat with P-3 8s and crashed with his machine about a kilometer west of Giugliano station; the crash site was not found until two days later—Robert Gugelberger: “Today they found the spot where Uffz. Niesen crashed. A hole three meters deep. A few shreds of our yellow neckerchief and a piece of scalp with blonde hair, bent pieces of metal everywhere. That was all they found of him.” Uffz. Leo Niesen was JG 53’s only casualty in this action; on the other hand a total of 26 Lightnings were claimed shot down, including eleven by the “Pik-As Geschwader. ” American records admit the loss of just 13 Lightnings, however. Dibble: The Day of Armageddon - August 30, 1943 Description An account of the resource From Jim Dibble's account titled "The Day of Armegeddon" included in this collection: "Following the invasion of Sicily in July 1943, the missions flown out of North Africa by the 1st Fighter Group pilots in their P-38 Lightnings had a common objective of preparing for the invasion at Salerno, Italy by the United States Fifth Army." A mission on August 25th was highly successful, with a loss of only 8 P-38's. The 1st Fighter Group earned a Presidential Distinguished Unit Citation for their efforts, but the August 30 mission, for which they would earn a second citation, was not so easy.
