They wrote home frequently as well as evidenced by the volume of James' letters. Here is a collection of letters and postcards he sent home to his wife Maxine, brother Bill and parents while serving in Africa and Italy. Be sure to look at the letter dated 1943-04-10. Notice how James indicated he censored his own letter and look at the special form he had to use to send it home. Notice on other letters where they are stamped whether they were censored or not. After reading Stan's report of the mission, Ray Schulze responded: "I remember the mission very well. I was happy to hear that Stan survived despite his ordeal. I will not dispute Stan's report of the mission.” “However, I say the reports I filed following the mission that day was the way I saw the results unfold. In the turmoil of a gun battle things happen very rapidly and the markings on our planes were not that large and identification of an individual plane was not fool-proof. I do believe that Jim bailed out of his plane that day. There was so much anti-aircraft fire coming in our direction it will always remain a partial mystery of Jim's fate and how he met his maker." Ray Schulze's assessment is understandable. The formation was flying at over 300 mph ten feet off the ground. His plane was being shot at from every imaginable direction. Information from other pilots indicated that the anti-aircraft fire was as heavy as they had ever seen it. By the time Ray noticed the planes ahead of him on fire, Stan had already overtaken Jim's plane and was in the lead. The enemy fire was so intense few of the other pilots could even successfully complete their attack on the convoy, and seeing two planes already shot down, returned to the base. We now knew that Jim had indeed been killed on September 9, 1943. He had not, as my Grandmother feared, been shot while floating to earth in his parachute. Title A name given to the resource James P. Dibble: Killed in Action Description An account of the resource Typically pilots rotated home after their 50th mission. James took off for his 49th mission on Septemebr 9, 1943, and never returned. He was shot down on a straffing run near the town of Padula, Italy. Initially there was much confusion amongst the other P-38 pilots, and it was thought James survivied and may have been taken prisoner. Ultimately it was discovered that James had been shot down and then killed by German soldiers. James was ultiamtely brought home and buried in Mt. Hope Cemetery in Middleville, Michigan. Dibble: The Day of Armageddon - August 30, 1943 Description An account of the resource From Jim Dibble's account titled "The Day of Armegeddon" included in this collection: "Following the invasion of Sicily in July 1943, the missions flown out of North Africa by the 1st Fighter Group pilots in their P-38 Lightnings had a common objective of preparing for the invasion at Salerno, Italy by the United States Fifth Army." A mission on August 25th was highly successful, with a loss of only 8 P-38's. The 1st Fighter Group earned a Presidential Distinguished Unit Citation for their efforts, but the August 30 mission, for which they would earn a second citation, was not so easy. Dibble: Letters Home Description An account of the resource Getting letters from home was always a highlight of the week for everyone overseas. They wrote home frequently as well as evidenced by the volume of James' letters. Here is a collection of letters and postcards he sent home to his wife Maxine, brother Bill and parents while serving in Africa and Italy. Be sure to look at the letter dated 1943-04-10. Notice how James indicated he censored his own letter and look at the special form he had to use to send it home. Notice on other letters where they are stamped whether they were censored or not. Like most others, James had to be careful not to divulge too much information about where he was. James was killed on September 9, 1943. Be sure to read his last letter home, sent the day before. Abbiamo effettuato le indagini da voi richieste con i seguenti risultati: - L'aereo proveniente da Sala Consilina cadde alle ore 14,00 circa del pomeriggio del 9/11/43 a Padula (vedi foto n.7 e n.5). Era stato colpi to nella parte posteriore. I testimoni, che si stavano recando nei campi a lavorare, videro questo aereo con ia parte posteriore in fiarn- rne, abbassarsi per un atterraggio di fortuna. Nell'atterrare l'aereo si capovolse ed un'ala dello stesso ando a sbattere contro una cabina elettrica ( vedi foto n.l). Immediatamente accorsero dei soldati tede- schi, provenienti dalla Certosa di Padula, ove vi era il Comando e 0a.:ipo di concentramento ( vedi foto n.5). Arrivati sul luogo cominciarono a sparare colpi di arma da fuoco e dopo essersi assicurati che il piio- ta fosse morto, portarono via gran parte dell'aereo. Dopodiche gli stes- si soldati tedeschi, accorgendosi della presenza dei contadini, i quali erano rimasti tra i campi a curiosare, chiamarono due di loro, Paoio e Vito Cimino, e gli ordinarono di scavare un fosso per seppellire il corpo del pilots tenente Dibble (vedi foto n.3 e 4). Dopo una settimana Antonio, Pnoio Cimino, che all'epoca era apprendista falegna- figlio del contadino me, costrui una croce di legno e la pose sul terreno dove era stato sep- pellito il pilots americano, che si trovava nella propriety dei signori Cimino. Dibble: Killed in Action Description An account of the resource Typically pilots rotated home after their 50th mission. James took off for his 49th mission on Septemebr 9, 1943, and never returned. He was shot down on a straffing run near the town of Padula, Italy. Initially there was much confusion amongst the other P-38 pilots, and it was thought James survivied and may have been taken prisoner. Ultimately it was discovered that James had been shot down and then killed by German soldiers. James was ultiamtely brought home and buried in Mt. Hope Cemetery in Middleville, Michigan. They wrote home frequently as well as evidenced by the volume of James' letters. Here is a collection of letters and postcards he sent home to his wife Maxine, brother Bill and parents while serving in Africa and Italy. Be sure to look at the letter dated 1943-04-10. Notice how James indicated he censored his own letter and look at the special form he had to use to send it home. Notice on other letters where they are stamped whether they were censored or not. Dibble: Killed in Action Description An account of the resource Typically pilots rotated home after their 50th mission. James took off for his 49th mission on Septemebr 9, 1943, and never returned. He was shot down on a straffing run near the town of Padula, Italy. Initially there was much confusion amongst the other P-38 pilots, and it was thought James survivied and may have been taken prisoner. Ultimately it was discovered that James had been shot down and then killed by German soldiers. James was ultiamtely brought home and buried in Mt. Hope Cemetery in Middleville, Michigan. Dibble: The Day of Armageddon - August 30, 1943 Description An account of the resource From Jim Dibble's account titled "The Day of Armegeddon" included in this collection: "Following the invasion of Sicily in July 1943, the missions flown out of North Africa by the 1st Fighter Group pilots in their P-38 Lightnings had a common objective of preparing for the invasion at Salerno, Italy by the United States Fifth Army." A mission on August 25th was highly successful, with a loss of only 8 P-38's. The 1st Fighter Group earned a Presidential Distinguished Unit Citation for their efforts, but the August 30 mission, for which they would earn a second citation, was not so easy.
