They wrote home frequently as well as evidenced by the volume of James' letters. Here is a collection of letters and postcards he sent home to his wife Maxine, brother Bill and parents while serving in Africa and Italy. Be sure to look at the letter dated 1943-04-10. Notice how James indicated he censored his own letter and look at the special form he had to use to send it home. Notice on other letters where they are stamped whether they were censored or not. Like most others, James had to be careful not to divulge too much information about where he was. James was killed on September 9, 1943. Be sure to read his last letter home, sent the day before. In High School, James met Maxine Erway who would ultimately become his wife. After graduating from Hastings High School in 1939, he went to Chicago and began working in the bakery business. Dibble: We want to give our excuses for the long respond on your letter but because of the technical investigation, it took a lot longer than we thought. We have finished the investigation with these results. The airplane came from Sala Consilina and fell at 1400 hours on the afternoon of 9/9/43 at a location named Padula. on the rear. The airplane was hit The witnesses which were going to work in the fields, saw the airplane with the rear in flames going down for a crash landing, The airplane, when it crashed, landed, flipped and one of the wings went against a cabina elettrica. Immediately, German soldiers from the Certosa di Padula, upon arrival, they started to shoot small arms, and after they were sure the pilot was dead, they took a majority of the pieces of the airplane with them. The German soldiers noticed that the peasants going to work in the fields stayed there to look. Eventually they called two of the men, one by the name of Paolo and Vito Cimino, two brothers, and they told them to dig a grave so they could bury the body of the pilot, Lt. Dibble. After a week, Antonio, which is the son of Paolo Cimino, which at that particular time, was learning how to be a cabinet-maker or wood worker, made a cross in wood and put it on the grave where the pilot was buried. That particular piece of land at that time belonged to the family of the Cimino's. One year after that, the body was dug up by the English forces, and if you come to Italy, we will give you some more details at that par ticular time. Cimino Vito, who is still alive, born in Teggiano, February 1, 1911, a resident of Padula since 1938. He was the first one to arrive there and the only one who is still alive. He was shot down on a straffing run near the town of Padula, Italy. Initially there was much confusion amongst the other P-38 pilots, and it was thought James survivied and may have been taken prisoner. Ultimately it was discovered that James had been shot down and then killed by German soldiers. James was ultiamtely brought home and buried in Mt. Hope Cemetery in Middleville, Michigan. All available German fighters (the “Pik-As Geschwader” together with Stab and I/JG 77 and IV/JG 3) were scrambled to intercept. The aircraft of II Gruppe climbed out of Cancello between 11:37 and 11:46 AM and soon afterwards engaged the enemy—the following account appears in Robert Gugelberger’s diary: “11:39 AM, scramble. Climbed to 4,000 m. An enemy formation with strong fighter escort approaching the coast. We positioned ourselves above the formation intending to fire our rockets into it from in front. The fighter escort circled behind the formation. We dove steeply, reversed course, and approached from dead ahead. I fired and saw both rockets fly through the middle of the formation, however they exploded behind it. Dove beneath the bomber formation and pulled up. Above I met Fw. Steinmuller—we flew together and attacked Lightnings. 50 to 60 were circling madly. Another rocket-armed machine fired into the Lightnings and two went down. More launches and more crashes in the water. I attacked twice from above in a dive. Got in a brief burst. Then I spotted two Lightnings, positioned myself behind the second machine and fired. Burst was on target but now I was surrounded by Lightnings. Climbed vertically and was happy to have got away. The Lightning I fired at was shot down by another of out pilots. Fuel was running low and I had to return and land at 12:51 PM. On the way I saw American life rafts in the water. Uffz. Niesen failed to return.” Leo Niesen had been shot down in combat with P-3 8s and crashed with his machine about a kilometer west of Giugliano station; the crash site was not found until two days later—Robert Gugelberger: “Today they found the spot where Uffz. Niesen crashed. A hole three meters deep. A few shreds of our yellow neckerchief and a piece of scalp with blonde hair, bent pieces of metal everywhere. That was all they found of him.” Uffz. In High School, James met Maxine Erway who would ultimately become his wife. After graduating from Hastings High School in 1939, he went to Chicago and began working in the bakery business. Dibble: Killed in Action Description An account of the resource Typically pilots rotated home after their 50th mission. James took off for his 49th mission on Septemebr 9, 1943, and never returned. He was shot down on a straffing run near the town of Padula, Italy. Initially there was much confusion amongst the other P-38 pilots, and it was thought James survivied and may have been taken prisoner. Ultimately it was discovered that James had been shot down and then killed by German soldiers. James was ultiamtely brought home and buried in Mt. Hope Cemetery in Middleville, Michigan. They wrote home frequently as well as evidenced by the volume of James' letters. Here is a collection of letters and postcards he sent home to his wife Maxine, brother Bill and parents while serving in Africa and Italy. Be sure to look at the letter dated 1943-04-10. Notice how James indicated he censored his own letter and look at the special form he had to use to send it home. Notice on other letters where they are stamped whether they were censored or not. Like most others, James had to be careful not to divulge too much information about where he was. James was killed on September 9, 1943. Be sure to read his last letter home, sent the day before. About 50 cr 60 miles off the southwest coast of Naples, Italy, at about 500 feet. The formation rendezvoued with the Sunderland over SIDI AHMED, TUNISIA at 0750 hours. The formation did not see ary wreckage, but sighted 2 dinghies about a quarter of a mile apart, one empty, and the other containing 6 men, at 1000 hours. Dibble: Killed in Action Description An account of the resource Typically pilots rotated home after their 50th mission. James took off for his 49th mission on Septemebr 9, 1943, and never returned. He was shot down on a straffing run near the town of Padula, Italy. Initially there was much confusion amongst the other P-38 pilots, and it was thought James survivied and may have been taken prisoner. Ultimately it was discovered that James had been shot down and then killed by German soldiers. James was ultiamtely brought home and buried in Mt. Hope Cemetery in Middleville, Michigan.
