You, the people of Padula, do great honor to my brother
today. This red haired, freckled faced hero, raised on a
farm in the United States died here on a farm field in Italy
doing more than his share to try to make this a better world
for all of us.
You also honor our whole family - how proud our Mother
and Father would be.
With this memorial a permanent bond is established and the
memory of 1st Lt. James P. Dibble will live forever.
May the long arms of friendship and mutual respect
between the people of our two great countries also exist
forever.
We are very, very grateful for your open expression of
friendship and respect.

Thank you for the invitation to attend the dedication
ceremony for your uncle, First Lieutenant James P. Dibble, to
be held on 8 April 2000. Unfortunately, due to previously
scheduled commitments, I regretfully must decline. I have
forwarded your invitation to Brigadier General Dan Darnell, 31st
Fighter Wing Commander, Aviano Air Base, Italy and asked him
to provide a representative for the United States Air Force. His
staff will contact you in the near future with the name of our
representative.
You can be very proud of the accomplishments of
Lieutenant Dibble. Ultimate sacrifices made by many of our
service men and women are the very reason we can appreciate
the freedom and pride we have in our great nation.

Lt. Jim Dibble’s Last Mission
Lt. Jim Dibble on September 9, 1943 was assigned as the
Squadron Leader - composed of 12 P-38 “Lightning”
aircraft of the 94th Fighter Squadron, 1st Fighter Group which departed Dittano, Sicily to cover and patrol the
Salerno invasion area.
Upon completion of our allotted patrol time and
encountering no enemy aircraft the shipboard controller
directed us to attack a large concentration of German
equipment and men reported in this region.
Lt. Dibble led his squadron on a low-level attack against a
large camouflaged and well defended German force. On
his initial strafing attack both Lt. Dibble and his wingman,
Lt. Stanley Wojick were shot down due to the very intense
heavy small arms, machine gun and 20mm fire.
Unfortunately, Lt. Dibble was killed and Lt. Wojick, who
bailed out, was severely injured and became a prisoner of
war.
Lt. Dibble, from Hastings Michigan, was on his 49th
combat mission and only needed one more mission to
complete his combat tour of 50 missions and return home.
He was an outstanding pilot, leading his P-38 fighter
squadron against a formidable enemy force.
�He was a short, feisty fighter pilot who broached no fear in
his previous 48 combat missions and an individual who
received the admiration and well deserved respect of his
fellow fighter pilots.
As his tentmate from our North African campaign days
through Sicily and on to Salerno it was indeed a heartfelt
loss to see my comrade in arms, his aircraft as well as his
wingman crash.
At this loving memorial in Lt. Dibble’s honor, may I recite
an old “Irish Blessing” one that would bring a smile to
Jim’s face.
“May the road rise up to meet you.
May the wind be always at your back.
May the sun shine warm upon your face;
And the rains fall soft upon your fields;
And until we meet again, may God hold you
In the palm of his hand.”
Also, may I include all my blessings from Lt. Dibble’s
tentmate and Blue Flight Leader on that fateful day.

Fifty-seven years ago, my Unclb led the 94th Fighter Squadron into
this valley, and we honor him for that today.
Shortly after World War Two began, Jim joined the Army Air
Corp to learn to fly. He was driven by an inner desire to be a pilot
and he simply would not let anything stand in his way.
By early September 1943, Jim was a 21-year-old veteran of 48
combat missions. He had participated in famous missions. He had
shot down German Fighters, as well as destroying several targets
on the ground and flying just two more missions meant that he
would be able to return home.
September 9, 1943 was the day that the Americans landed at
Salerno. It was also Jim’s 49th and final mission.
We know today that on that mission, Jim’s plane crashed into this
field while his wingman was able to bail out of his burning plane.
I started this project to try to find out what happened to my Uncle
on his final flight. What I found was much more.
I found Jack Hanton who flew his fighter plane down this valley
with my Uncle. I found John Mullins a fellow pilot in the 94th
Squadron.
I found Sal and Vinnie DiMaio and Carmine Pinto without who’s
help this would not have been possible, and most importantly I
found this beautiful city of Padula and its wonderful citizens.
On behalf of my Uncle Jim and the rest of my family, allow me to
thank you all for making this a very special day.

The citizens of Padula, Italy, were extremely friendly and helpful during Jim & Ted Dibble's search for answers to their uncle's death. <br /><br />As everyone learned more about James and what happened, they viewed James as a hero and wanted to honor him.
