’’This old burying ground is on the town line road between Yankee Springs and Orangeville
Townships, a few rods west of the county road C-611. A fence, now almost gone, at one
time enclosed this little plot. Bushes etc. show where graves are or were but the only
tombstones are within the wire fence which encloses the Duffy family lot. For many
years the only stone was that of Bridget Duffy, but in the summer of 19^0 the other
three were set up. The following excerpt from a letter written November 21, 19UO by
Mr. J. C. Raymond of Middleville to Mrs. Monteith is all that I have been able to learn
of the history of this old cemetery.
’ Perhaps that is one of the oldest cemeterys
in the Co. and it was a Catholic Cemetery. There use to be a log Church right East
of the Cemetery. I have seen it and been in it when I was a boy. I attended one
funeral there and that was the old lady Duffy over 50 years ago. And there is probably
15 or 20 Bodies there but I do not know the names of all of them. There is 5 of the
Duffy family there 3 three girls and Mr. and Mrs. Duffy and there is one O’Connor
girl and maybe two. And there is a man buried there by the name of Ronan. And there
is a man there by the name of Beard, I think and there is 2 or 3 Babys hurried there
but I do not know their names.’ ”.

i Unkempt Assyria Twp.o
By STAN KAUFMAN
Most of the graves in Checkered
Cemetery are hidden under waist-high
weeds.

Many have sunk several inches below
the level of the surrounding ground.
Some are marked simply with chunks
of rock, without inscriptions.

AVERY

Checkered Cemetery, in southwestern
Assyria Township in the extreme south
end of Barry County, is hidden from
view behind a grassy knoll at the remote
crossroads of Woods and Bowen roads.
You'd never know it was there unless
someone told you about it.
“It’s disgraceful, “ said Emmett Her
rington, a member of the township ceme
tery board.

Herrington, standing amid the weeds,

said that the other three township ceme
teries — Ellis, Bell and Assyria — are
“in A-l shape.
“We’re going to bring Checkered
Cemetery up to the same high level. It is
shameful that it has been left to become
so decrepit. It's terrible to think that
such a hallowedjilace should look like
this," he said.

The Assyria Township Board of Trus
tees has allocated $1,100 in revenue-shar
ing money to spruce up the cemetery.
Three Barry residents now receiving
welfare benefits will-be working on the
project. A sexton also is to be hired to
take care of the four cemeteries.

Among the legible markers still
standing is that of “And’w Rog
ers/’ a member of the 1st Michi
gan Cavalry in the Civil War.

The biggest chore will be clearing
away the dense weed growth. Herrington
said a man will be hired to do that, and
added that the sunken graves will be
marked with concrete blocks.
“This will no longer be an eyesore,

even if no one can see it from the
We know it is here and we don I; ever
intend to let it reach such a deplorable
state again," Herrington said.
The history of Checkered Cemetery is

hard to trace.

One of the oldest marked graves
there is that of “And’w
War veteran of Company H, 1st Michigan
Cavalry It appears he might have been
killed in combat and returned home for
burial. This cannot be substantiated.

The most recent burial in Checkered
Cemetery seems to have been in 1929.
One gravestone marks the common
grave of two wives of Geo. R. Brown.
The first wife, Sarah A., died April 9,
1860, at age 28. The second wife, Eliza
beth R., died Aug. 7,1864. She was 38.
Another stone marks the grave of
Elizabeth, the wife of John J. Wrate. She
was 38 when she died on Feb. 11,1892.
Someone close to the Rogers family
has decorated several graves. The artifi
cial flowers are unfaded and clean.

Herrington counted 37 sunken graves
which lack headstones.
Who is buried in these graves proba
bly will never be known. There are a
number of graves marked only with
rocks of various sizes.
“We’re trying to find information
about Checkered Cemetery." Herrington
said. “There must be some oldtimers
around who could give me information
that would be helpful in tracing the his
tory of the cemetery.
“It s quite probable that people do •
visit the graves of relatives. Maybe
these people could provide us with some
connection with the past," Herrington
said.
